No expense spared: interior designer Nicky Haslam has furnished the two flats in a
'slightly Hollywood style'

The price is the highest since the recession began and is being seen as a sign of a recovery in London's prime rental market.

Measuring 5,000 square feet each, the neighbouring duplex apartments, on the seventh and eighth floors of Avenfield House in Park Lane, overlook Hyde Park in one direction and offer views of the London Eye and City in the other.

They have been furnished by interior designer Nicky Haslam. His style may be too opulent for some: the main bathroom suites are almost top-to-bottom Italian marble, while the banisters for the stairs are made of cut crystal. Haslam said: “It all has a slightly Hollywood style. The ceilings are so high that you can use enormous furniture. You feel on top of the world.”

Each has six bathrooms, roof terraces and underground parking. Landlord Charles Street Estates has spent 10 years creating the apartments with developer Morpheus. To buy one of the penthouses, which are being offered for lets of at least six months, would cost about £25 million.

Peter Wetherell, managing director of Wetherell, the agent marketing the properties, said there has been interest from Middle Eastern royalty, adding: “The tenant will be someone who wants a toe in the water in London and who wants the international address of Park Lane. You've got the bling, and the view.”

£150 would be enough to pay for a large room in a shared period house within Zone 2 for a week.
